Shipping Containers – Their Types and Advantages

When transporting goods in containers on ships can involve exposure to high humidity levels for long durations of time. This can cause damage to the material being shipped and can result in huge losses.
When sailing on the high seas, there can be the presence of large amounts of moisture that needs to be removed. This can be on account of climatic changes or due to the packing and content of the cargo that is being shipped. There are also instances when the container is not sealed properly and admits air and other pollutants inside.
The Different Kinds of Container Desiccants
Desiccants in containers need to remove large amounts of air and have to be designed accordingly. They can come in bags, strips or poles depending on the need. A common phenomenon observed inside containers is ‘Container Rain’. This occurs on account of the high dew point that develops inside due to the condensation that starts to develop inside the container. It is critical to remove the moisture from inside the container on a large scale in order to lower the dew point to prevent the cargo from damage.
The use of desiccants inside the container prevents the formation of warpage, corrosion and mild dew along with other forms of destructive substances that can severely affect the contents of the container. These desiccants come in smaller sized tyvek bags or in larger bags that are sewn in cloth. Generally, they are hung with strings inside the container at different points to prevent condensation from taking place.
The Advantages of Desiccants inside Containers
There are several advantages of using desiccants inside containers; a few of them are mentioned here:
 They have the ability to absorb almost 100% of their weight of moisture.
 Goods can be shipped without the threat of damage due to container rain and the related harmful dew formations.
 All kinds of rust, mildew and corrosion can be prevented with these desiccants.
 They can provide protection for more than 50 days at a time.
 These desiccants are completely safe for the environment, besides, after use they can be safely and easily disposed off.
 They can be used in all types of containers that are used for transportation and can include rail and air, ocean and truck containers.
 They protect almost all kinds of goods, from agricultural or food items to machinery and furniture among many other products.
